Macey's Meal in a bag-local-i-fied & "up" baked-EASY!

Are you a really busy person?  I know that I am.  I shop at Macey's Grocery store a lot and they have these great "meals in a bag" deals, often with a meal for six to eight people in the price range of $8-$12.  The bag has meats, veggies, eggs, sugars, breads, chips, creams, you name it.  AND A RECIPE... Everything you need to make a simple easy and pretty darn good meal in minutes.  NO LIE!

Pulled Chicken-Appenzell Farms
I like to play with my food, so I often alter these recipes, but they are still quick and easy, so I thought I would post this one on this blog for you!  You should check out Macey's website.   All of their best recipes are listed HERE, and I am willing to bet that you have many of the ingredients in your fridge.  If NOT, head on over... and grab today's bag!!  Give it a whirl!!  This recipe is for ZESTY SLOW COOKER CHICKEN BBQ, with a few alterations!!  To make it local, and Mine... :)

Crumb Brothers Sourdough
Ingredients:

3-4 lbs boneless chicken (I used Appenzell Farms--I had it and it is fantastic and locally "grown!")
1 Bottle of Snap Daddy's BBQ Sauce (24 oz)
1/2 C Caspers Salad Dressing
1/2 C Dark Brown Sugar
1 T Worsteshire Sauce
1/16 lb Bleu Cheese from Caputo's
1 C Shredded Jack
1/2 C half in half
1 Bag of lightly salted Potato Chips
1 Loaf Crumb Brothers Sourdough Bread-sliced
1 head of Lettuce/greens-torn

Directions:

Place Chicken in Slow Cooker.  Mix BBQ Sauce, Brown Sugar, Salad Dressing and Worsteshire Sauce, pour over chicken, give it a stir, and let cook on High for 4-5 hours.  When done, gently shred with fork (leave in sauce) and it is ready to serve.

When you are ready to eat:

In a small bowl place cheeses and half and half, melt together for 20 seconds at a time in microwave, stirring in between until smooth and creamy.

Serve the pulled chicken open faced on Crumb Brothers Sourdough.. You may drizzle it with the Jack-n-Bleu Sauce (depending on individual taste.)

Easy Jack-n-Bleu Sauce for Chips
Serve the Potato Chips drizzled with the Jack-n-Bleu sauce (YUMMY-this is a simple take off of an appetizer at one of my favorite restaurants...)

Serve a tossed green salad with the rest of the bottle of Kaspers Vinagrette!

EASY PEASY MEAL THAT IS KID FRIENDLY!!!  Fun on a Friday night and you are in the kitchen longer to clean up than to fix... and we all know that clean up can be passed on to the kids, dad, and everyone!!

  1. I purchased today a 10 oz jar of your product French Kiss for 10 dollars, I did this because the ingredient list was not filled with chemicals and I like to support local companies. Usually I would not pay a dollar a slice for jam but your jam promised the flavors of vanilla and white chocolate. Knowing your product as you do... you can imagine my disappointment when I opened the jar to find that I had a 10 dollar jar of watery baby food, offering only the tart flavor of unripened strawberries. I can't imagine how you expect to stay in operation without any repeat customers, for only a fool would fall for your fancy jar twice. Are you sure you can't make a profit at 5 dollars a jar? Do you really think your twice as good as your delicious competition? This is Utah; organic fruit preserves are as easy to find as a church. This is the first time I have ever taken my own personal time to communicate my dissatisfaction with a company, I have done so because your product is terrible and it is offensively pretentious of you to charge sooo much for it. Scoff and ignore me if you will, but in 5 years when your out of business because of your epic failures in quality don't say you weren't warned.

    1. Hello,

First of all thank you very much for your frank and honest commentary of my product. I am very happy to say that you are the very first person that I have heard this from. (I have had three jars of jam returned in two and a half years-out of over eighty thousand produced)

Your vehemence is surprising, but I am very glad that you are committed to local products and sustainability. I would only like to say/ask a couple of things, and I hope that you will respond using your true identity.

First, about the pricing, I do not price my products in the stores, the stores do-I have absolutely no control of retail pricing. What you paid is more than what I actually charge when I sell the product for retail myself. However when you own and operate a business yourself, you find these things out as you go.

Second, about the flavor. French Kissed is a White Chocolate Strawberry Butter (this is on the label). A Butter is a fruit spread that is cooked for hours until it is a consistency that is much like a baby food. Smooth, Silky and not a gelatinous sticky blob. I add no water to my product, so I am not sure why it was watery. My guess is that it was not hard set and thick...That is just my product.

All of my fruit is sourced from within the state of Utah from local growers, producers, etc. I take great care to purchase produce from within this state so that I ONLY benefit our economy. I also do not add sugar so you are tasting the fruit as it is purchased-fresh off the vine, tree, bush, etc. I add freshly sourced vanilla beans from IndriVanilla (a Utah Company), and Valrhona White Chocolate from Caputo's Market in Salt Lake City (also a Utah Company). So it may be tart compared to any other jam on the shelf- you are complimenting our Utah Farmers on the flavor of the fruit. And I am actually proud of that. I have a large clientele base because of that tartness. They do not like sugar, they do not like the getlatinous nature of the everyday jams, but they do like to eat simple, fresh fruit in a jar. No sugar, No Carbs, Just healthy food.

As for your statement about organic farms in Utah. I do not claim any of my produce is Organic that I use from the state of Utah. It is certified naturally grown, but there are only about 40 farms in the entire state that are actually certified Organic, so I would never sully my name to make that wild claim. They could not supply my small company with fruit, let alone as many "organic jam companies as their are churches." It is just not possible, and I want to reamin true to supporting and sustaining local farmers.

Finally, I sense that you have a full awareness of my product, and hence you should also be aware that I provide a 100% satisfaction guarantee with my product. I am more than happy to give you your money back or exchange the jam for you since you are not satisfied. I just need your name, address and I also require that you return the unused portion so that I can track the batch it was made from. I am very concerned about quality control and if it was a bad batch, I need to find know as soon as possible.

I see that you have only been a member of google for a couple of days, and that the only people to view your post have been myself and my employee. So, would you please be kind enough to tell me how you found out about this blog and why you posted the complaint here rather than emailing the contact address on my website?

Again, I am sorry for your experience, but I appreciate the feedback. I also thank you for allowing me to explain my side of the story in this post. I truly hope that you have the character to send me your name so that I can honor my commitment to customer satisfaction.

    2. It is true that I may have been overly vigorous in my complaints. I would like to apologize for calling your product terrible, as that is an opinion and not a fact. Calling it offensively pretentious has too much emotional baggage than can be applied to a single jar of disappointing spread. I also provided only complaint and no suggestion, making my comment rude and futile.

My comment about churches was in reference to the many church groups who make jam from their gardens and sell it as fund raiser, I was not implying that there are thousands of jam companies in this valley.

Since my initial tasting; other members of my household have tasted and enjoyed your product. No one has yet to taste the elusive vanilla and chocolate flavors however. It is just a tart strawberry flavor without any hint of vanilla, this is not surprising as vanilla is a subtle flavor and strawberry is a powerful flavor. I realize that real vanilla beans are very expensive and you clearly can't raise your prices any further to increase the amount of vanilla added to your product, so perhaps you should remove it from the label and the ingredient list. This would help to reduce the cost of your product and you can't taste it anyway. The same is true for the hidden chocolate. If you don't believe me crack a jar and honestly assess whether or not you can taste even a hint of vanilla or chocolate or anything but strawberry.

The numbers you quote are impressive only three returned out of 80,000 but most people will not usually take the time and energy to return the product, or to create a google account let you know their dissatisfaction. Most people will simply not buy it again allowing their lack of patronage to do their complaining.

I discovered this blog by googling your product name, and it was the first ability to communicate with you that I came to. My connection was moving slowly so I did not do extensive exploration of your website. I am not attempting to damage your company and I will happily delete my comments if you would like.

Given that you question my character for posting an anonymous comment and in the interest of full disclosure my name is Erick Hoganson. I live in Salt Lake City. I am 32 years old. That said I am not interested in getting a refund or spending anymore time and energy on this. So just let me know if you would like these comments removed, and I will happily oblige.

  2. Hello Erick,

Thanks so much for your re-evaluation. I would never ask someone to take down a review of my product because it reflected negative opinions. I am not so naive as to realize that one product is not for every person.

Thank you for being more constructive in your criticism of my product in your second post. I understand what you are saying.

What concerns me at this point is that you may have gotten a batch of jam that is not good. Last night we tested three different jars (from two different batches) and they all had a subtle vanilla flavor along with the flavor of strawberries. Each batch has a varying shade of pink (depending on the ripeness of the berries) but the spread tasted exactly like I describe it when I sell it "strawberries poured over vanilla ice cream." The White chocolate only gives it a stronger flavor of vanilla and silkier texture, as the ingredients in white chocolate are Cocoa Butter, sugar and vanilla extract. It does not actually taste like you are eating a white chocolate candy bar! :)

I know that you want to be done with this, and I truly appreciate your candid comments, but would you please tell me when and where you purchased the jam, so that I can go and inspect the product that store is carrying myself to assure that it is either replaced, and not compromised?

And again, please do not hesitate to find me at any market (DT SLC, Sugarhouse, Park Silly) throughout the summer that I attend (should you be at one) and introduce yourself to me. I am happy to refund your money to you, give you a taste of another product of mine and exchange it--whatever you desire. I am open to anything; I do not like to have disatified clientele.
